Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 28, 2026

RoadWatch (“we,” “us”) is a civic reporting app that lets you photograph damaged road safety products and route a report to the public agency responsible for that road. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We designed RoadWatch to collect as little as possible.

Information we collect

  • Account. To use RoadWatch you sign in with Apple, Google, or your email address. We receive your email and an account identifier; if you use Apple or Google, we receive a token from them confirming your sign-in (and your name, only if you choose to share it). We use this to secure your account and attach your reports to you.
  • Photos you take or upload. The image of the damaged hardware, and an optional “after” photo when you mark something fixed. For uploaded photos, we read the photo’s embedded GPS location (if present) to place the report; we do not read other photos in your library.
  • Location. When you take a photo in the app, we capture the GPS coordinates at that moment so the report can be routed to the correct agency and shown on the community map. Location is used only for reports you create.
  • Your contact details. Your name, email, and (optionally) phone number, which agencies require to accept a report and follow up. These are stored encrypted in your device’s keychain and are sent only to the agency you submit a report to.
  • Report content. The product category, AI-assessed damage severity, road name, jurisdiction, any notes you add, and the timestamp.
  • Community activity. The reports you post, the reports you confirm, and the ones you mark fixed — used to power the community map and the leaderboard (see below).
  • Subscription status. If you choose to support RoadWatch with a paid subscription, our payments provider tells us whether your subscription is active. The actual payment is processed by Apple or Google — we never receive your card or payment details.

How we use it

  • To identify the product and damage in your photo using AI vision analysis.
  • To determine the responsible agency and deliver your report to it.
  • To secure your account and let you sign in, sign out, and delete your account.
  • To show reports on a community map and feed so others can confirm them or mark them fixed. Public community data includes only what / where / severity / status / when — never your email, phone, notes, exact contact details, or photo.
  • To improve identification accuracy over time using confirmed reports.

Public leaderboard

RoadWatch has an optional community leaderboard that awards points for posting, confirming, and marking reports fixed. The leaderboard shows a display name made of your first name and last initial (for example, “Jane D.”) alongside your points — it never shows your email, phone, or full name. If you don’t provide a name, you appear as “Anonymous.” Your points are derived from your community activity.

Subscriptions

RoadWatch is free. You can optionally subscribe to help fund the service; it unlocks no extra features. Subscriptions are sold and billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play and are subject to their terms. We use RevenueCat to tell our app whether a subscription is active; neither RevenueCat nor RoadWatch receives your payment-card details. You can cancel anytime in your App Store or Google Play account settings.

How we share it

When you submit a report, its contents and your contact details are sent to the relevant government transportation agency so they can act on it and follow up with you. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.

We rely on these service providers to operate the app: Supabase (database and file storage, United States), OpenAI (image analysis), Apple and Google (sign-in and, if you subscribe, payment), and RevenueCat (subscription status). Photos are stored privately and are not publicly browsable.

Your choices and rights

  • Delete your account. Settings → “Delete account” permanently removes your account and your reports. You can also sign out at any time.
  • Delete your contact details from this device in Settings.
  • Location is optional per photo. You can deny location access; reports without a location can still be saved, but cannot be routed to an agency.
  • Access or deletion requests. Email us at privacy@road-watch.app and we will respond.

Data retention

Reports are retained to maintain the community map and the historical record agencies rely on. Your account and the reports tied to it are removed when you delete your account. Your on-device contact details live on your device and are transmitted to an agency only when you submit a report.

Children

RoadWatch is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Important safety note

RoadWatch’s assessments are informational and are not an engineering inspection. Never stop on an active roadway or shoulder to take a photo — report only from a safe location.

Changes

We may update this policy; we will revise the “Last updated” date above when we do.
